Biotech Lab
The laboratory of Biotechnology (Biotech lab) is a research unit of the Department of Biological Applications and Technologies (http://bat.uoi.gr/eng/index.php) of the University of Ioannina (www.uoi.gr). More than 60 under-graduate, 10 M.Sc. and 10 PhD students as well 4 Postdocs have been worked or work in the laboratory of Biotechnology. The research group of the Laboratory of Biotechnology consists of 2 University professors (Prof Haralambos (Haris) Stamatis and Assistant Professor Petros Katapodis), 1 researcher (Dr. Angeliki Polydera), post-doctoral researchers, 5 PhD students and 5 MSc students. The research group has a significant research activity and experience in the field of Enzyme and Microbial Technology, Biocatalysis and Nanobiotechnology. Members of the group were participated in 30 European and Greek funded research projects and have has more than 160 publications in International peer-review Journals and books. The Biotechnology Laboratory maintains a fruitful collaboration with numerous Greek and European
Laboratories. The main research activities of the members of the Biotech lab focus on the
Development of new “green” bioprocesses in conventional and non-conventional media for the production of high-value products (antioxidants, nutraceuticals, compounds with antiplatelet, anticancer, anti-angiogenic anti-microbial and anti-aging activity) and biodegradation of pollutants
Development of bionanoassemblies and bionanodevices and their application in biocatalytic processes, drug delivery and biosensing
Study of the enzyme function-structure relationship in organized nanostructures and nanomaterials
Green processes for the production of nanomaterials and fine-chemicals
Production, cloning, overexpression, purification and characterization of enzymes,Improvement of enzymes properties using enzyme engineering approaches
Production of high-value products and biofuels by microbial cultures and microalgae (Modeling/Optimization/ Scale-up).
Microbial biodegradation/biotransformation of pollutants.
Layered and Nanoporous Materials Group is an experimental synthetic group working in the area of layered and nanoporous materials.
Ceramics and Composites laboratory
Layered and Nanoporous Materials Group is an experimental synthetic group working in the area of layered and nanoporous materials. Group research interests concern the chemistry of phyllomorphous materials (in particular clays, pillared clays, organo-clays and carbon layered structures), hybrid organic-inorganic nanocomposites, carbon nanostructures (carbon nanotubes, fullerenes, graphene, graphene oxide), mesoporous materials, as well as, biocatalysts and magnetic nanoparticles.
The Faculty of Medicine has become one of the best medical schools in Greece and has contributed to the radical rise of Greek research worldwide.
LABORATORY OF PHYSIOLOGY
History: In 1963 the University of Ioannina, an independent Higher Education Institution was founded in Ioannina, which grew rapidly in the coming years. The Faculty of Medicine was founded in 1977 by G. Kallistratos. Kallistratos was the Chief Professor of the Laboratory of Physiology, since his death in 2001. He was a lifelong member of Max-Planck-Society for the Advancement of Science, member of New York Academy of Science, of American Association for the Advancement of Science, of German Society for Science and Medicine and many other Scientific Societies. The Faculty of Medicine has become one of the best medical schools in
Greece and has contributed to the radical rise of Greek research worldwide.
